Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud invites Professor C.S. Lewis to discuss the existence of God, Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter, and Lewis’ unconventional relationship with his best friend’s mother. Lewis in the film Earth Shadow (1993) 30 years before this film. Lewis is studying the Gospels when a woman who appears to be his wife invites him to bed. The film is set in 1939, but Lewis was married to Joy Davidman Gresham until 1956.

“Freud’s Last Session”; this is a huge disappointment for me

This fictional meeting between the innovative psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and the writer C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) in the days of World War II, when the first German bombers arrive in England, makes the audience ask themselves what they are trying to find out, challenging themselves about human nature and whether God exists. or not (Freud is an atheist; Lewis is a Christian). The material is adapted from a play by Matt Brown, and it’s poorly rendered on screen, not allowing the two characters to spend 15 minutes in a session alone without switching back and forth between some background moment from each character or some modern-day situation involving a bomb threat or Freud’s failing health requiring constant care. A daughter, about whom we have tense revelations about her relationship with her overbearing father.

And they tried so hard to make it a plot twist about this character and her secretary that it was annoying – especially when you know that while Freud didn’t condemn homosexuality as a moral issue, he didn’t want them around (read Paul Rosen’s book Working with Him). For the life of me, because it wasn’t actually a session, I still have no idea what Lewis was doing there. The verbal duels are the moments we expect, there are so many interesting bits and exchanges between them, but overall everything falls flat because either the dialogue isn’t that great; the editing makes it all feel like a tennis match – there’s not a single moment for any monologue or any plot sequence; and the constant tracking of past moments on the sidelines that try to build character or show some background, but it’s all distracting and boring. A film that contains such ideals and challenges about humanity, God, faith and human relationships, and the pros and cons of everything, needs to have some coherence between the action and dialogue to create something that we, the audience, can question ourselves or what we’ve done. don’t think.

Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones

You have to create excitement, even if the issues aren’t that exciting (to some), and stay “bored”; the game format without distractions. If there’s one play and film adaptation that perfectly captured that feeling, it was The Sunset Limited, starring Samuel L. The simplicity of the action, as he stays in a small apartment room, and the brilliance of the complex dialogue become a thrilling and mind-blowing experience. Hopkins and Goode don’t have the same dynamic, although they are good performers.
