Investigative judge Iman struggles with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran

When his gun goes missing, he suspects his wife and daughters and imposes draconian measures that strain family ties as social norms crumble. Director Mohammad Rasoulof was originally scheduled to participate in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the Un Certain Regard jury. . However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan over a deadly building collapse. On May 8, 2024, Rasouloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, as well as flogging, a fine, and confiscation of his assets.

On May 12, 2024, Rasouloff announced that he had fled Iran and was residing in an undisclosed location in Europe

On May 24, 2024, Rasouloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes and held photos of two of the film’s actors, Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh, on the red carpet. The Seed of the Sacred Fig is the first relevant and powerful film about the Iranian uprising that took place in 2022. The Women, Life, Freedom movement was born right after the arrest and death of Jina Mahsa Amini, a student who did nothing but remove her veil. The director introduces us to the family of an Iranian judge (working for the state and the Mullah’s regime), who is about to receive a life-changing promotion just as the 2022 revolution begins. We, the audience, somehow experience this crucial period in Iran through the eyes of this middle-class family, who are about to improve their living conditions.

Should I go to university despite the strikes?

We appear in their daily lives until their father (the judge) disappears or their gun is stolen from their house. The film has a fantastic script, great actors, and shots of an unknown Iran. You get to see Iran as we rarely see it, with its modernity, rich history and ancient monuments, poverty and shortcomings. As in many Iranian films, the viewer is immersed in complex situations with ethical questions that force a choice between moral, personal values and loyalty to the regime: Should I wear this veil or another (less provocative) one? Should I ask a neighbor for a favor and risk exposing my family’s problems?

I especially enjoyed watching the Iranian middle class

Ethical questions are everywhere and are a direct consequence of the harshly repressive regime that has ruled Iran for decades. With all these questions, the characters are faced with dignity and a sense of duty, sometimes even loyalty to a regime that did not care about its people. Through these situations, the lack of freedom, the coercion of women, the complicity of those who profit from this regime and of course the brutality of a regime that is doomed to sacrifice its own people in order to survive are exposed. through the fate of the father, who was willing to do his job with respect, but had to corrupt himself and sacrifice his people in order to survive this revolution, no matter how painful it was. In the Western world, it is difficult to see and imagine what the daily life of women in Iran is like.

This is another discovery of this film

The longer the film, the better, because it clearly shows the impasse the country has fallen into, and with it its inhabitants (and in this case this family) are condemned to look for the culprit in their midst. Thanks to social media, you notice the seeds of discord that are germinating in this family, in society, among students and around the world. The key is social networking; it is the instrument through which Baraye’s song resonates, images of police violence spread, evidence of oppression accumulates, these are the hopes of Iran.
